The strategic objective of LifeLine Southern Africa, regarding the AIDS Helpline is, by 2009 to have extended the AIDS Helpline into the Government’s HIV and AIDS National Strategic Plan by developing it into a central service point, providing access to comprehensive, accessible, equitable, co-ordinated and specialised services that contribute significantly towards the behavioural change of individuals and communities.

  • To conduct an ongoing review of the positioning and operations of the AIDS Helpline, in order to provide for consolidated and comprehensive and quality service-delivery in line with the country’s new HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan for 2007 – 2011.
  • To complement and strengthen the government’s communication strategy, aligned with the new National Strategic Plan, by extending and expanding the AIDS Helpline’s unique form of communication further into rural communities, with specific focus on gender-related issues and other identified areas of vulnerability.
  • To contribute towards the development of a strong, national, relevant, referral system to strengthen the support systems within the continuum of care - across LifeLine Southern Africa’s structures, governmental structures, private sector, NGOS and various communities.
  • To contribute significantly towards sustained change in risk behaviours of callers, by providing comprehensive and intensive education, emotional support and counselling.
  • To establish the Treatment Line as the first point of call for critical information and support to infected and affected individuals; their families and relevant institutions, on HIV and AIDS, TB and STI treatment-related issues.
